Hi I’m Dan Nowak a system administrator turned illustrator. I write this website to help others who are contemplating attending art school to help others decide if it is the right choice for them. Prior to enrolling at Academy of Art University I spent 10 years working in the technology field. I have held every job from Help Desk to System Administrator. Only after being injured at work did I begin to search for a new career. Secretly I always admired creative people. I knew that I had the ability to be creative myself if I was given the opportunity. I wanted to learn to draw. Most people would have enrolled in a community college course or bought a book. That is not my style. Instead I enrolled in one of the nations premier art schools.
I can’t draw
When I enrolled at AAU I had no previous drawing experience. I had a art class in high school but never really produced anything worth while. When I say I can not draw I am serious. This is one of my first drawing from my first class in college. It is supposed to be a sphere. Clearly I have much work to do. Being a little nervous about enrolling I spoke to the director of the Illustration department about my ability to succeed in illustration. He told me that the first couple of weeks of school I would want to shoot myself and go home in a pine box. After drawing this picture I can say that is exactly how I felt.
